It was founded by Allan Rutherford, a former President of the   Group Apple Users Group in Christchurch. He became a founding member of SeniorNet Mac Incorporated. Gathering around him an enthusiastic group of like-minded people and receiving funding from a number of businesses and grant schemes, Allan steered the fledgling Society from a membership of 37 in early 2001 to 600+ by 2016.

In 2010 Allan received a Civic Award for services to Adult Education and Computer Literacy for his work with SeniorNet Mac.

Many of the people who supported the newly founded SeniorNet Mac have been awarded Life Memberships for their long-term commitment and service to the Society. Life Membership Awards have been given to:
Allan Rutherford (2007); Brian Henderson (2007); Tom Mitchell, (2008) deceased; Shirley Schmidli (2009); Ian Hoskin (2009) deceased; Barbara Blowes current President (2011); Margaret Harvey (2012); Austin Hadler (2012); Gerry Constable (2013) deceased; Win Waterhouse (2013); Margaret Hatton (2015); Derek Brown (2016) deceased; Robin Harrington (2017) and Ross Beach (2021)

Over the last 20 years the Society has provided an essential service for older people to keep abreast of the phenomenal progress of Apple technology, which left many confused and bewildered.

In the early years, its Learning Centre was in the old School buildings in Cranmer Square, and most of the computers were provided by the Patron, Murray Wood. But, in the 2011 earthquake, Murray Wood died and the building was rendered uninhabitable. For a time, SeniorNet Mac moved to The Christchurch Women's Club building but is now housed at
Learning Centre: 41 Essex Street, Christchurch, 8011

Throughout all the changes, dedicated volunteers have helped hundreds of people learn about and enjoy using their
