'Hard
Drive'
Folders only should be showing
when you open up your Hard Drive. Everything on your Hard
Drive should be filed in one of these folders.
I have the following folders although you may have slightly
different names to some of yours. System, Utilities,
Internet, Games, Odds, Programmes, Desktop Items,
Personal.
The folders I believe you should at least have are System,
Utilities, Games, Programmes, Internet, & Personal.
System
In here is everything that makes your computer tick. As a
general rule unless you know what you are doing, put nothing
in here. Keep out of this.
Utilities
In here is kept things like virus checkers, QuickTime, Speed
disk, Stuffit, Res edit, Disk Copy, Disk Wizard,
Disinfectant, Disk First aid.
Internet
In here you keep anything that makes the Internet
tick.
Programmes
In here you keep all your Applications or Programmes, but
not Internet Browsers and emailers. These go in the Internet
folder.
Games
In here you keep all the games you have.
Desktop
Items
In here I keep all those folders I want as Pop
ups.
Personal
This is the folder I keep all those files or documents that
from time to time should be backed up. Files or documents
that have been created from various
Applications.
Odds
In here I Keep all those help files and things that I am
unsure where else to place them. Someone one day might help
me put them somewhere else.

'Hard
drive Full'
Even although you may have
10mb free, every time you open and work with a programme,
space is used on your hard drive and apart from this, where
do you save everything if there is little room
left.
When is your hard
drive full??
Not an easy question to answer, but if you have less than
20mb to 50mb available consider one of the
following.
What do you
do.
You can buy a new hard disk to replace the one inside your
computer. If you want a bigger SCSI drive for an older Mac,
you could buy a Seagate Medalist 4.5GB for about $595 + GST.
If you want an IDE drive for an imac (and some older Macs),
you can get a Barracuda 13.6GB drive for about $400 + GST.
(information supplied by Craig Saunders.)
You could buy an
external hard disk,
so that you don't have to replace the hard disk inside your
computer. That way you end up with two hard disks. (The case
to put your external hard disk in adds around $150 to the
price though.)
There are other
options.
You can remove all your programmes or the less frequently
used applications and put them onto a zip. Make an alias of
these and place the alias on your computer. Now when you
want to use this programme you click on the alias and a
notice will come up telling you what zip to
insert.
Another
option.
is to place all your applications onto a CD and make an
alias of all these and place on your hard drive.
Several members of the club have the equipment needed to
write a CD for you.
A second hand hard
drive.
may also be another option, if one is
available.
A member of the committee would be
able to assist you in your best option.
'Help'
Holding down Command+? will
open up the help file.
'Help
Memory'
When going into the Help menu,
you may get the notice "Not Enough Memory"
An alert box may appear with a message that there is not
enough memory to use Mac Help, particularly after updating
or installing new software on your computer.
Symptom
When you try to search Mac
Help, an alert box with this message appears:
"There is not enough memory to complete this operation. Quit
other open applications and try again."
However, the Finder indicates that there is an adequate
amount of available memory.
Products
affected
Mac OS 9.x
USB Printer Sharing 1.0.1 or earlier
Solution
Remove the file "Help
Viewer Accessors" from the Apple Help Prefs folder in the
Preferences folder.

'Home
Page'
Tested on
Claris Homepage version 3
Before you start creating your
web site follow these instructions on how to set up your
computer. Although there may be various ways of doing this I
find you won't go far wrong if doing it this way.
Create a Folder and Name it Home Page.
Create two folders inside this folder and name one HTML
files and another and name it Upload.
Create a folder inside the folder named HTML files and name
it images.
In the Home Page folder you can keep any notes to
yourself.
Place the folder named Home Page inside your folder you have
for storing all your personal data.
You now have a folder called Home Page that has two folders
in it. One called HTML files and one called Upload.
Insider the HTML folder you have another called images.
Open Claris home page 3.
Under the Edit menu go to Spelling and under Select
dictionary set to English.
Go to Edit menu and go to Preferences.
Click on Browser Preview and set which browser you want to
use.
Go to HTML Source.
Set the top line to read HTML, if not already reading
this.
The next line, Header Comment change to None. (you can
change this later.)
The bottom three little square boxes, just have a cross in
the top one, remove any others.
Now you should be set to go.
Under the File menu click on New Page.
Go to the icon for Document Options.
Click on Appearances and set the colour of the background of
the page you want to use.
Click on Parameters and type the name you want to call the
page. This is the name your viewers will see.
Now save the document in the HTML folder and call it
index.html it must be named this and exactly as I have
typed. No CAPITALS and No spaces. This will be your home
page.
Any other pages you create you can call whatever you wish
but when saving you must only use small letters and no
spaces between words. Instead of using a space you must use
_ So if your page name was My Mums Page you must save it as
my_mums_page.html
All images must also be in small letters with no spaces and
must be followed with the extension code.
All html files go in the Html folder and all images go in
the images folder.
Have fun and I'll see you soon. email me if you need
help.
'Home
Page Anchors'
Tested on
Claris Homepage version 3
An anchor is something you
place on your page and from anywhere you can direct your
page to go there.
To make an
anchor.
Let's say you want to return to the top of the page.
Click at the top of the page and then go to the Insert menu
and click on Anchor. You will be asked to give it a name.
Type in: return_to_top.
Now go to where you want to return from, probably the bottom
of the page. Here you will have written return to top.
Highlight this and then click on the link editor button. Now
click on the arrow at the far right of the panel that opens
and click on: Link to open file. Choose the file you want to
refer to and then click on the notice: return_to_top. You
will find as a default already there will be: top of page.
Don't use this, but use the one you have created. You will
find now in the URL panel #return_to_top.
If you now go to the preview button and scroll down to the
bottom of the page and click on: return to top you will be
taken back to the top. You can put anchors anywhere on your
page. It is good practice to name your anchors to represent
the place it refers to. Don't use capitals or spaces.
Note. If you use the default setting: top of page this will
open a new window and reload. This takes time and I would
recommend not using it.
You can use an anchor that gets refered to from another
page.

When typing reaches the end of
a line it will automatically return down to the next line.
However if you use the Return button it will return down as
if you required a new paragraph. If in fact you didn't
intend for it to be a new paragraph. When you get to where
you want it to return down. Go to the insert menu and click
on Line break.

Page Tables Adding New Line'
Tested
on
Claris Homepage
version 3
Ever wondered how to add a
line to a table, when you want the new line to be inserted
between two others. Do this. Double click on your table and
then add a line. Now you will see a line has been added to
the bottom of your table. Click in it and go to the html
source. You will see something like this.
<TR>
<TD>
<P></P>
</TD>
</TR>
Your cursor will be between the
<P></P> Scroll over all these codes shown and
cut. Now go back to your edit page and you will see the line
you placed in has gone. Now click on the beginning of the
line where you want the new line to be. Go back to the html
source. Once again go up to the beginning of the line
<TR>and hit return. Then put your mouse up to the
blank space you have created and say paste. Depending on how
many columns you have in your table will depend on the html
extra codes that are between
<TR>
<TD>
and

Page Tables 'Setting Width'
Tested
on
Claris Homepage
version 3
When creating a table that you
want to be the full width of the screen, the width allocated
should be 100%. Don't use pixels or auto. By using 100% then
the table will be the full width of the computer screen, no
matter what screen size is being used. The columns within
the table can be set to either pixels or auto depending on
the use you have for them.

Page Up Loading'
Tested on
Claris Homepage version

Once you have created your
html files and before you up load. Check all your links and
that you have all your html files together and all your
images together in another folder. Make sure all your html
files are all named in small letters with no spaces between
words and end with .html All your images as with your html
files must be in small letters with no spaces and end with
the extension code, i.e.: .gif Instead of spaces between
words always use _. i.e.: my_home_page.html
Your front html Page must be called
index.html
Up Loading html
files.
Open your index page and then go to your File menu and click
on Remote and then Up Load. A box will appear, click on the
notice that says: Set ftp Options. In here you have to fill
in your Server name, your User name, and your pass word. All
these would have been sent to you from your server. Click on
to save password. In the remote folder box would normally
have nothing. Your server would have advised you on this.
Your ftp mode should be Passive. Now click OK, another box
will appear. Check all details are correct, the box that
reads include image files leave blank, and then click on Up
Load. This will now automatically connect to the Internet
and Up Load.
Once you have done this go to your web site and check that
it got there OK. If not check your settings again. You can
now Up Load all your html files as above.
Up Loading Image
files.
Have Home page running and go to your file menu and click on
Open Folder as Site. A box will come up and you will have
to, using the scroll bars find your images folder. This
should be in your html folder. Once you have found it double
click on it to open it. At the bottom of this box now will
say Select Images folder. Click on this. A box will now
appear headed Site Editor_images. If you scroll through this
box you will see all your images plus another file called
site_definition.wst At the top of this box you will find a
link with an arrow facing up called Up Load. Click on this.
another box will appear and click on Set ftp Options. In
here fill in as you did when sending your html files. Where
it says Remote Folder, this time instead of leaving blank as
you did with your html files, type in /images Now click OK
and check the details are correct and select Entire site.
Now click on Upload. Once again you will be automatically
connected to the Internet and your files will be Up Loaded.
As before check your web site for any errors.
I find it handy to make another folder within the Homepage
folder and call it Uploads. In this folder place another
site_definition.wst as explained above and direct it to the
remote /images. This folder is used for any further Uploads
you will have of images.

favourites in your toolbar. Open up your Hotlist folder and
create a new folder and call it Toolbar within this Hotlist

To place this new folder on your Toolbar, click on it while
holding down the Control key and click on Use for favourites

Before
attempting see 'Desktop'
An easy way to collate all
your every day applications and personal folders with one
touch of the mouse.
Go to your system folder and make an alias of the Launcher
Items folder. Place this on your desktop.
Now in here place folders for Games, Programmes,
Utilities, Personal and anything else you may
want.
The first letter of the folder must be To do this
hold down Option 8 and then the name of the folder.
Now all the folders you want quick access to, make an alias
of and place in the appropriate folder. You will find
all these folders in the folder called Desktop Items in your
hard drive.
Go to your Control panel which you will find in your system
folder and make an alias of Launcher. Place this on your
desk top also.
Now on your desk top you will have your Hard drive, a Trash
Can, a Launcher alias and a Launcher Items alias.
It is a good idea to put the Launcher and Launcher Items
aliases, into your Apple menu.
By setting up your computer this way there will be no need
to go fishing around in your hard drive. If you want the
Launcher to be activated at start-up, go to your Apple menu
and click on Control Panels and then General Controls. In
the box which opens click on the box where it says, Show
Launcher at System Start Up. Also in your extensions manager
make sure you have a cross against Launcher. Your Launcher
will now open up automatically each time you start up your
computer. I find it best however when you have the Launcher
placed in your Apple menu for this to be
unnecessary.
