April 2006 Social Meeting
"I bin everywhere man . . . " These words from
the well known song could well describe this month's speaker, for
Clive Dyson has, it seems, excelled as a "jack of all
trades".
In the course of his address, titled
"Life and Death Experiences", Clive admitted to have had a ball with
his life, which, it seemed, he stated was almost pre-ordained as a
survivalist, having been almost written off shortly after birth with
family being called to the hospital for goodbyes, only to be
confounded by an unexpeded and rapid recovery.
The trend seemed to prevail when, as a younger man he was sitting in a moving train when, due to fog it ploughed into the rear of another, taking an overhead bridge away upon which a third train was passing overhead. The sudden chaos killed over 20 people around Clive, leaving him sitting unscathed! He also survived a heart operation on January 25, 1962.
His many occupations have included timber yard worker, accountancy, teaching, signwriting, a minister of the Methodist Church, operating a tearooms, a funeral assistant and, latterly a funeral celebrant ( jokingly described by him as an extra-terrestial travel agent) and, presently, as a part-time aircraft cleaner.
Welcome to these new members:
David Forbes, Fay & Stephen Graham,
Val Williams, Rex Cosgrove, Clem & Margarette Paterson, Barbara
Adams, Sally Buzan, Clive Dyson, Florian & Annette Furjan,
Heather Knowler, Lynnette Dobbie, Edwin Frank and Freda
McGurk.

March 2006 Social Meeting
Bob Millar Director of the Salvation Army Street Outreach Service gave us a very informative talk on the work he and others do with the "Street Kids" and the Night Life on Manchester Street. What wonderful work these dedicated people do. The Street Kids who congregate down Colombo Street who are an absolute pain, love the feeling they get drinking on empty stomachs so Bob and his team feed these kids with pies and coffee and try to enforce in a nice way that it not cool to drink and drive and try to encourage a safe driver for each car a feat not easily done if you have actually seen the element that is there.
Down Manchester Street they also provide coffee and food for the young ladies who stand out there in all weathers , skimpy clothes and often freezing with the cold. Many of them only trying to earn a living for their families just like the rest of us only in a different way.
The Salvation Army also have a safe house where they help people who need time out.
He extended an invite to us if we wanted to go out with them one night to actually see first hand what they do.Some of us thought that we might just do that .
February 2006 Social Meeting
Peter Sadler was the guest speaker at our February meeting. His information on various aspects of the road code was very useful. By illustrating updated road signs on the whiteboard he encouraged us to look out for these in the future. A lot of us had queries answered and problems explained. All of this was done with a touch of hilarity as Peter does take over 60's for driver licencing. He had a repertoire of funny things that had happened that he told us about. A very enjoyable afternoon was had by all who attended.
